Primary School

Key Stage 1 ( Year 1 and 2 )

As learners progress through their educational journey at Creative British School in Abu Dhabi, they step into Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2), embarking on a path that melds the National Curriculum for England and the Oxford Curriculum. Key Stage 1 serves as the bridge from the Foundation Stage, where they build upon their established foundation, fostering well-rounded and confident students who pursue excellence in every facet of their education.

In Years 1 and 2, dedicated full-time teaching assistants provide invaluable support to ensure that every child has optimal access to the curriculum, enabling them to reach their full potential. Our approach integrates both formative and summative assessments to shape our teaching and planning, continuously elevating the learning experience and helping learners unlock their full capabilities. The implementation of streaming during Read, Write Inc lessons guarantees a highly personalized approach, catering to the unique needs of each student. Our guiding principle is to ‘keep up, not catch up.’

 Parental Engagement

We deeply value parental involvement, striving to establish a strong partnership with parents. We share information, classroom resources, and facilitate learning through Google Classroom, offering real-time updates on your child’s progress and accomplishments throughout the week. Our weekly newsletter keeps parents connected with school news. While we hold three formal parents’ evenings over the academic year, our open-door policy encourages frequent meetings between parents and teachers to discuss progress and chart the next steps in a child’s learning journey. Additionally, parents are invited to attend class assemblies once a year during the winter season.

Curriculum

Our curriculum design emphasises the meaningful application of knowledge, skills, and understanding in real-life contexts by making cross-curricular connections whenever possible. We carefully plan activities to maximise firsthand experiences and align with the unique learning strengths of our students. The curriculum we offer is vibrant, creative, and engaging, enhanced by regular curriculum-themed dress-up days throughout the year.

In Year One, we place a special focus on Discovery Learning, which takes place daily. Learners engage in interdisciplinary, play-based sessions designed to boost their communication and social skills. Parents have access to curriculum content and are kept informed through each learner’s dedicated Google Classroom account. We celebrate learners’ holistic achievements weekly during assemblies, recognising accomplishments such as “Star of the Week” and “Student of the Term,” (awarded three times a year).

The core academic curriculum in Key Stage 1 encompasses the following subjects:

  • Arabic
  • Islamic Studies (for Muslim students)
  • Social Studies

  • Mathematics
  • Science

Supplementary subjects that enrich the learning journey include:

  • Art
  • Moral Education (Year 2)
  • Physical Education

Upon leaving Key Stage 1 to enter Key Stage 2, our learners will have honed crucial social skills and developed a genuine love for learning. They will also possess the academic skills necessary to thrive in the next phase of their education.

KS2 ( Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 )

Curriculum

Students in Key Stage 2 follow the National Curriculum for England, which is supported by the Oxford Curriculum as a resource. This stage builds upon the foundational knowledge acquired in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Personalised learning ensures that each child’s progress and development is continuous and aligns with their age-related expectations and more. We encourage our students to embrace values, attitudes, and qualities that foster independent thinking, initiative, and active participation in their learning journey. We firmly believe that every child has the potential for success.

Parent Involvement

We are dedicated to fostering a strong partnership with parents to enhance their child’s education experience. We keep parents informed about their child’s progress and accomplishments on a weekly basis through our “weekly newsletter” and by sharing educational resources and lesson materials via Google Classroom. Furthermore, we organise three formal parents’ evenings throughout the school year. Our open-door policy encourages parents to regularly meet with teachers to review their child’s progress and plan for future learning objectives. Additionally, we provide an opportunity for parents to attend class assemblies once a year during the winter term. Our school’s parents committee convenes regularly to discuss important topics and present their ideas to ensure the school continually evolves with the input of our valued stakeholders in our day-to-day school development efforts.

Leadership Development

In Key Stage 2, we emphasise the development of leadership qualities and provide each student with opportunities to take on responsibilities at the class, year group, or whole-school level. Through value-based learning, we nurture organisational skills, cooperation, accountability, and teamwork. In Year 5 and 6, our prefects, Head Boy, and Head Girl are a culmination of this effort, and they proudly represent our school.

By the end of Key Stage 2, all our students will have received a comprehensive education and developed a deep understanding of what it means to be a successful learner. They will be well-prepared for their secondary education, possessing an aspirational mindset, empathetic character, articulate expression, and self-confidence.
